XenDesktop

Traditional PC deployment in an enterprise environment looks something like this: IT maintains a number of images that fit different types of workers (managers, clerical, developers, accounting, sales, mobile workers, etc.) times the number of approved operating systems; PCs are purchased and shipped to the data center; the security software is updated on each of the images that will be used on the PCs;IT puts an image on each PC that includes the OS, the most common apps and the company-approved security software; A percentage of the PCs that don’t exactly fit the image (custom apps, extra needs) must be customized; IT then ships or otherwise distributes the PCs to end users; A percentage must be redeployed that arrive DOA or broken;IT is then responsible for monitoring, updating, securing, and backing up.

Eventually, PCs are retired and the process started all over again. Important point: The Hardware, the OS, the Apps and the user’s data and preferences (their profile) are all tightly coupled. Making changes for one aspect means making changes for other aspects.

Citrix XenDesktop, the clear choice for desktop virtualization (VDI), provides:

  • The best desktop TCO – Centralizing and simplifying desktop management throughout the desktop management lifecycle dramatically reduces desktop management overhead, storage and endpoint requirements; extends lifecycles of desktop hardware; and lowers power and cooling costs.
  • Single image desktop management – Maintaining a single master virtual desktop image in the datacenter and providing users with an up-to-date, pristine desktop at each logon drastically reduces patch and upgrade maintenance efforts, and cuts storage costs by up to 90 percent. XenDesktop also extends centralized desktop delivery to physical endpoints, while still centralizing desktop management using a single image in the datacenter.
  • High definition user experience – Whether the desktops are hosted or local, XenDesktop ensures a high definition user experience from any device, on any network.
  • Built-in virtual applications – Virtual applications enable fewer, simpler virtual desktop images and eliminate system conflicts.  This can reduce application regression testing and increase virtual desktop density by up to two times.
  • Open architecture – XenDesktop integrates with Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESX, and works out-of-the-box with desktop appliances. This ensures an open, and flexible virtual desktop (VDI) implementation with no vendor lock-in for virtualization or endpoint devices
