Senior Backup and Recovery Subject-Matter Expert (Contract)

Office Location: Ottawa, Ontario

DLS is looking for experienced Senior Backup and Recovery Expert to join our growing team on one of our larger (longer term) client projects in support of global cutting-edge network technologies and infrastructure.


Reporting directly to the Project Business Owner (or delegate), the resource will support the development and implementation of the client’s network System Management – Backup & Recovery Capability.  Working embedded with our client’s System Management team, the Network Backup & Recovery Subject-Matter Expert will help develop a turnkey solution that is simple to use and is easy to maintain and train.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will be responsible for, including but not limited to:

  • The Backup & Recovery Subject-Matter Expert (SME) will primarily work in the client’s network environment and be embedded with the System Management (SM) Team (i.e., receive work direction from the SM Team) to provide support in developing the following artifacts for both the Headquarters and Mobile Domains:
    • Provide support in finalizing the overall Backup & Recovery concepts of employment (Backup & Recovery SM CONEMP);
    • Provide support in finalizing the detailed Backup & Recovery plan;
    • Provide support in finalizing the development of detailed SM procedures related to Backup & Recovery;
    • Provide support in identifying functional gaps in the current tools to perform complete backup and recovery of the Headquarters and Mobile domain infrastructure, Servers, Services and data.
    • Provide support in developing System of Systems (SoS) and Mobile and Headquarter Domain level Backup & Recovery test cases; and
    • Provide support to Training Team in developing Backup & Recovery Initial Cadre Training (ICT).
  • It is expected that the Backup & Recover SME will:
    • Provide support to the SoS System Integration teams to configure Backup & Recovery tools for SoS & Mobile and Headquarters Domain level test events and for the TSIL Lab environment in general;
    • Review / Participate / witness Backup & Recovery related test cases;
  • It is also expected that the Backup & Recovery SME will:
    • Provide Disaster Recovery and Training (DRAT) training to other members of the clients, partners, and client’s end-users.
    • Propose technical solutions for improving the installation, operation, and maintenance of the DRAT.
    • Provide 4th line support to the network team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a concrete and demonstrable background in networking and system administration.
  • Must have experience with System Center Data Protection Management (SCDPM) – Expertise on the installation, configuration and operation of SCDPM. 
    • Needs knowledge on how to perform backups and recovery of Databases, File systems, Shares, MS-SharePoint farms, and Virtual Servers (through a VMWare infrastructure).
  • Must have expertise in Network Attached Storage (NAS) configuration of a NAS and its attachment to SCDPM.
  • Must have experience in the use of DPM (Microsoft Data Protection) software.
  • Must have expertise in architecture and operation of Domain Controllers, to efficiently design a backup and recovery plan for the Domain Controllers. 
  • Must have expertise with MS-Exchange architecture and the operation of Exchange servers to efficiently design a backup and recovery plan for the Exchange servers   
  • Must have expertise on the use of CA Spectrum for the backup and recovery of routers, managed switches, and, potentially, other SNMP enabled network devices. 
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of SNMP.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards and best practice for Disaster Recovery principles/solutions for server farms would be an asset.


  • Experience with Canadian Army would be an asset.
